In an era dominated by e-commerce giants and larger corporations, it is so important to remember the significance of shopping local and supporting small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our communities. Here are some of the reasons why The Broken Plank team feels like shopping local is so important and it can benefit both individuals and communities all over the USA.
- Strengthening the Community
When you shop at local businesses, you're investing in your own community, and other small communities across the USA. Local businesses are more likely to source their products and services locally, which creates a cycle of support within the community. This, in turn, leads to economic growth and stability. Here at The Broken Plank, all of our materials and supplies we use for all of our Photo Boards are sourced locally and all of our materials are made in America.
- Preserving Unique Local Culture
Small businesses often reflect the unique character and culture of their surroundings. Whether it's a boutique bookstore with a curated selection of local authors or a restaurant that serves regional cuisine, or even a small handcrafted workshop like ours, these businesses add charm and distinctiveness to a community. By supporting them, you help preserve your local culture and traditions.
- Job Creation
Small businesses are significant job creators. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses accounted for 64% of new jobs created in the United States from 1993 to 2011. When you choose to shop locally, you're contributing to job growth in your area, which, in turn, reduces unemployment rates and fosters economic stability.
- Personalized Service
Local businesses often provide a level of personalized service that larger corporations can't match. As Small business owners we are deeply invested in our communities and are more likely to go the extra mile to meet our customers' needs. This personal touch can lead to better customer experiences and stronger customer loyalty. You can see this quality and attention to detail by going on our website and reading our reviews from real customers.
- Environmental Benefits
Shopping locally can be more environmentally friendly. Smaller businesses often have a smaller carbon footprint than their larger counterparts. They may source their products locally, reducing the need for long-distance transportation, and they're often more inclined to implement sustainable practices due to their close ties to the community. Here at The Broken Plank we pride ourselves on being a “no waste” small business. We have no waste wood shop, everything gets used. The small scraps that can’t be made into photo boards, are repurposed and made into cutting boards. We also make sure to recycle and reuse everything that comes to our location, mail, packaging, inserts. We shred on site and reuse for packaging protection and stuffing.
- Boosting Innovation
Small businesses are often at the forefront of innovation and entrepreneurship. They're more agile and flexible, allowing them to adapt quickly to changing consumer preferences and market trends. By supporting these businesses, you encourage innovation and more options in the marketplace.
- Keeping Money in the Community
When you spend money at a local business, a more significant portion of that money stays within the community. Studies show that for every dollar spent at a small business, approximately 67 cents stays in the local economy. This money circulates through the community, benefiting schools, public services, and local charities.
- Fostering Healthy Competition
A diverse marketplace with a mix of small and large businesses fosters healthy competition. This competition can lead to lower prices, improved product quality, and increased innovation. It's a win-win for consumers and the small business community.
Here at The Broken Plank we pride ourselves at being a small business with handcrafted, quality products. We appreciate each and everyone of our customers who trust us with their sentimental gifts. We ask that when shopping online, remember the importance of supporting your small businesses. Your choices make a difference, one purchase at a time.
